25 'Gaming' Phones Walked Into Our Lab — Only a Few Actually Came to Play

There's a certain kind of marketing magic that happens when a phone company adds the word "gaming" to a product page. Suddenly, the same chip that powers every other mid-range handset becomes a "performance-tuned gaming processor." The same 90Hz display becomes an "esports-grade refresh experience." And somehow, a phone that throttles under load gets called "built for the most demanding titles."

We got tired of reading the copy. So we tested the hardware.

Over six weeks, we ran 25 smartphones — all marketed with some variation of "gaming" as a selling point — through a gauntlet of real-world tests. We're talking actual games, not synthetic benchmarks that make everything look rosier than it is. Frame rate logging. Thermal imaging after 30-minute sessions. Battery drain under sustained load. Sustained performance over time, not just the first five minutes before a chip decides it's too hot to care.

The results? Let's just say the marketing department and the engineering department weren't always on the same page.

How We Set Up the Tests

We deliberately avoided leaning too heavily on tools like 3DMark or AnTuTu in isolation. Those numbers are fine for comparisons on paper, but they don't tell you what happens when you're 45 minutes deep into a Call of Duty: Mobile ranked match and your phone starts cooking your palm.

Instead, we ran four primary gaming titles — Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Mobile, Diablo Immortal, and Fortnite — all at their highest available graphics settings. Each session ran for 30 continuous minutes. We used a thermal imaging camera to capture surface temperatures at the 10-minute, 20-minute, and 30-minute marks. Frame rates were logged using per-game tools and a secondary capture device where needed.

We also ran a "sustained load" protocol: two back-to-back 30-minute sessions with a five-minute break in between, specifically to see how phones recovered (or didn't) from heat buildup.

All phones were tested on the same Wi-Fi network, fully charged at the start, and set to their highest available performance modes when applicable.

The Thermal Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

Here's the thing about mobile gaming that phone companies really don't love to advertise: heat is the enemy of performance, and small rectangular slabs of glass and aluminum are genuinely terrible at dissipating it.

About a third of the phones we tested — including several that retail above $600 — showed significant thermal throttling within the first 20 minutes of Genshin Impact on max settings. We're talking frame rates that started strong in the high-50s and cratered to the mid-30s by minute 25. That's not a gaming phone. That's a phone that pretends to be a gaming phone until the thermals catch up with the ambition.

The worst offenders came from brands that leaned hardest on their gaming marketing. One device — we'll call it out specifically — advertised "advanced vapor chamber cooling" in its press materials. Our thermal camera showed surface temps hitting 108°F on the back panel after 20 minutes of Diablo Immortal. The frame rate log told the same story: a sharp performance cliff right around the 18-minute mark. Vapor chamber or not, the physics of heat transfer in a thin chassis have limits.

The Phones That Actually Delivered

Not everyone failed, though. A handful of devices — about six out of the 25 — maintained consistent frame rates across both 30-minute sessions with minimal thermal degradation.

Unsurprisingly, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro was among the strongest performers. ASUS has been at this long enough to understand that gaming phone buyers actually play games, not just run benchmarks. The AeroActive Cooler accessory is still a bit goofy-looking, but it works. Surface temps stayed manageable, and frame rates in Fortnite stayed locked at 60fps with minimal dips across both sessions.

The Nubia RedMagic 9 Pro also held up well. Its built-in fan — yes, an actual fan — continues to be a divisive design choice aesthetically, but from a pure thermal management standpoint, it's hard to argue with the results. Sustained performance was among the best in our entire test group.

Somewhat more surprising: a couple of flagship Android devices not specifically marketed as gaming phones outperformed several dedicated "gaming" handsets in sustained load tests. The lesson there is that raw chip efficiency and chassis design matter more than marketing language.

The Battery Drain Reality Check

High-refresh displays, sustained CPU/GPU loads, and max brightness settings are a battery's worst nightmare. We tracked battery drain across each 30-minute session and found that several phones burned through 15–20% of their charge in a single half-hour of Genshin Impact. That's under two and a half hours of continuous play on a full charge — not great for anyone who games on the go without a charger nearby.

A few phones offered dedicated "battery saver" gaming modes that capped frame rates to extend playtime. That's a reasonable tradeoff, but it does somewhat undercut the whole "max performance" pitch. You can have smooth frames or you can have battery life — you generally can't have both, and most of these phones didn't try very hard to find a middle ground.

What the Spec Sheet Gets Wrong

Processor specs are the biggest sleight of hand in gaming phone marketing. Yes, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is fast. But the chip's peak performance and its sustained performance under thermal load are two very different numbers, and manufacturers rarely advertise the latter.

Display specs are the second-biggest mislead. A 165Hz refresh rate sounds incredible. But if the game you're playing caps out at 60fps — which most mobile titles still do — that number is largely irrelevant. A handful of titles support 90fps or 120fps on compatible hardware, but the library of games that actually pushes past 60fps on mobile is still pretty thin in 2024.

RAM amounts are the third. More RAM helps with multitasking and keeping games loaded in the background, but raw RAM capacity has almost nothing to do with in-game frame rates. Yet "16GB RAM" shows up in gaming phone ads like it's the whole story.

Our Bottom Line

If you're shopping for a phone specifically to game on, the label "gaming phone" is not a reliable guide. Our testing found that fewer than a quarter of the devices we put through real-world gaming sessions lived up to their performance marketing in any meaningful, sustained way.

The phones that actually delivered consistent, thermally stable gaming performance were the ones built around serious cooling infrastructure — not just a vapor chamber mentioned in a press release, but genuine heat dissipation solutions that show up in the thermal data.

Before you spend your money, ask one question: can this phone maintain its frame rate 25 minutes into a demanding game without throttling? The spec sheet won't tell you. But now you know who to ask.
