There's a certain irony in downloading an app to help you get things done, only to spend the next 20 minutes setting it up, granting it permissions, watching it chew through your battery, and then forgetting what you were supposed to be doing in the first place. We've all been there.

How We Tested

Four of the 40 apps we tested were responsible for over 30% of total background battery consumption across our test devices — combined. One habit-tracking app with a built-in social component was pinging servers every 4 minutes, even when we hadn't opened it in days. Over an 8-hour sleep window, it consumed more battery than our always-on display.
The cleanest performers? Offline-first apps that only sync when you open them. They're less flashy, they don't have a community feed, and they probably won't get featured in a "top apps of the year" roundup. But they respected our devices — and our batteries.
The Notification Avalanche Nobody Asked For
Here's a stat that should make you audit your home screen today: across all 40 apps, we received an average of 23 unprompted notifications per day, per app, during the first week after install. That's before we'd customized a single setting.

A handful of well-established task managers and note-taking apps hit all four marks. They're not the newest or the most feature-packed tools in the store. But after six weeks, our test users consistently rated them as the apps they'd actually keep. One user put it simply: "It just gets out of my way." That's the whole game.
The Feature Bloat Trap
Somewhere along the way, productivity apps started competing on features rather than outcomes. They added kanban boards, AI summaries, team collaboration layers, gamification systems, and integrations with 200 other services. The result is apps that require onboarding tutorials longer than the tasks they're meant to help you complete.

Measure time-to-core-action yourself. Open the app fresh. How long does it take to do the one thing you need it to do? If it's more than 10 seconds, that friction will wear you down.
